Most people overestimate what they could do in a year and underestimate what they could do in 36 months. It's the continuous incremental progress that pays off in saving money, paying down debt, losing weight, sculpting a body, developing your social media, increasing your audience, learning the Bible … you name it.
This works both ways, “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, Then your poverty will come as a robber and your want like an armed man.” (Proverb 24:23)
It's the gradual accumulated price of negligence and bad habits that cumulate to cause the collapse of health, a marriage, financial or spiritual condition.
You can reverse the direction of your life in any area by making small constant adjustments. Know that this works!
In a day of “instant everything” the tendency is to look for a quick fix. American marketing coined the term “for fast temporary relief” and it reveals something about our culture. We are not interested in addressing underlying issues that cause problems; we are interested in temporary relief.
How does this play out in solving big problems facing the nation? In economics, we postpone dealing with issues because the short-term interests of political parties and elections make bold, necessary action dangerous to those seeking to stay in office.
Regardless of our increasing appetite for fast temporary fixes, the law written into the architecture of the universe admonishes us to: … “become not slothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience shall inherit the promises. ” Heb 6:12
One old time writer called it “cosmic habit force,” the gradual development of new muscle built over time by force of habit. Learn to endure and persevere in the direction of your dreams knowing that the daily practice of any new discipline will over time become a habit force that will give you just about anything you desire.
Keep believing and endure the process. “So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up.” Galatians 6:9
Keep at it. Measure progress and add it up. Take a look at where your life will be in 36 months if you just practice the little disciplines every day.
