Quick Understanding

The Spirit of the Lord can make you “of QUICK understanding in the fear of the Lord…” Isa 11:3-4 describes a person who is operating beyond his natural wit and is accessing the “Spirit of wisdom and understanding.”

Such a person Isaiah says “will not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: but with righteousness shall he judge…

This is a dimension of perception working in you to cause you to not judge by what is happening in the natural. People can say all the right words but your spirit can and should have a “check”. Sometimes your spouse will get this “quick” perception if you missed it.

If there is one gift critically needed in these days, it is “discerning of spirits.” Especially if you are a person who is hungry for the supernatural or naturally trusting.

Ever notice how you can override your own discerning and let yourself be convinced of something? Afterward when things don't work out you say: “Something was telling me not to do that.” Well, that “something” was your spirit man. Your spirit knows stuff your head does not know and if you are not careful your head (or someone else's) will talk you out of what your spirit is trying to tell you. Especially if you “want to believe” what you are hearing.

Con men and marketers are slick, but you can usually tell you're getting sold. It's the sincere people that mess you up. People mean well. They promise you money or help but are often speaking “prophetically” (which is often fantasy). In raising money for a friend's ministry I once had two people in one meeting give a million dollar offering. I was excited till I found out later they were “pledged” in “faith” – they didn't have the money on them….and never produced it.

“Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give according to what you have, not what you don't have.” (2 Cor 11:12)

If you're a giver, never promise to give money you do not have. Likewise if you're a minister, never allow your discerning to be influenced by need.

“Love believes all things” but love discerns all things, also. That's why we need others and  their objectivity. I've got one friend who won't hesitate to tell me: “I've got red flags all over this one – don't let your heart get vulnerable.”

It's interesting that even secular writers like Malcolm Gladwell will write books like “Blink” and point out that our first quick impressions are often in a “blink” more accurate than our cumulative later impressions.

With “discerning” of spirits you can sense something deeper than what is coming out of the mouth. Of course some will have “suspicion” and call it discerning, but that's no substitute for “quick understanding” in the fear of the Lord.

This discerning will pick up devils at work or discern God at work, but mostly this gift is needed to judge “soul and spirit” or what is of human origin and what is divine.

If you discern your own thoughts and motives accurately you'll judge others' accurately. The best way to acquire this “quick” ear is to become really familiar with a secret revealed in this verse:

“For the word of God is QUICK, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the DIVIDING asunder of SOUL and SPIRIT, and of the joints and marrow, and is a DISCERNER of the THOUGHTS and INTENTS of the heart.” (Heb 4:12)

We need discerning of spirits in the Last Days. With the Word, and the fear of the Lord, we only need a half a word – a “blink” and we'll know intuitively what our spirit is picking up. It's like advanced radar. We'll be of “quick understanding.”
